IRI Cleans up the World
For the second straight year, IRI was chosen to be the major partner in “CLEAN UP THE WORLD” weekend held last Saturday, September 20, at Los Baños, Laguna. This worthwhile event, backed by the United Nations Environment Programme with the Australian Government, brings together around 38 million volunteers in over 120 countries around the world in a simultaneous cleaning event. This year, the main streets and coastal barangays of Los Baños, Laguna were the main clean up areas. Likewise, the venue served as a collection point for all kinds of electronic wastes and used appliances, which were in return traded for shirts and umbrellas. Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), students, and other volunteer groups joined in this half-day event which aims to educate the public, most specially the youth, about environmental conservation and to make everyone aware of how important it is for us of keep mother earth a healthy place to live in. Mr. Luis Rey Velasco, UPLB Chancellor and Adviser of the Philippine Australian Alumni Association, Inc. – Los Baños chapter, gave the welcome remarks to formally open the activity.
